3 Hour Class

Workshop Title: PICTORIAL QUILTING: PHOTO TO APPLIQUE TO PAINT
Class Description: Annette will take you through the process of making an original pictorial quilt from your own photograph. (This is not photo transfer.) You will learn how to make a pattern from your photo and then construct your quilt top using a raw-edge fused appliqué technique. You will also learn how to use textile paint to add details, depth, shadows and highlights to increase the visual impact of your quilt. Using good composition and creating depth are emphasized. Quilting ideas will be discussed and Annette will show you how to make an artist’s facing to finish the edges of your quilt. No sewing machine is required unless you are a very fast worker and think you may get to the quilting stage before the end of the week. Bring batting and backing if you bring your machine. Another option for fast workers is to create two quilt tops from two different photos. Most students will get one quilt top finished.
4 ½ to 5 Day Class
Note: Class fee includes: transparency, 30”x40” foamcore design board (We will be keeping our quilts small enough to fit on these, no bigger than 26”x36”, smaller is fine); use of paints, brushes and painting supplies during class.
Supply List
3 or 4 different photographs (for choices) blown up to 8”x10” or 8 ½”x 11” in color on photo paper. Choose fairly simple photos to make the learning process easier. Simple flowers, objects, still lives, and landscapes are suggested. Images with a lot of small details will bog you down in the learning process. Images with some shadows can be more interesting. If you like having a black and white photo to use for value reference bring them also, but it isn’t required.
- Ultra fine tip Sharpie Marker
- 2 mechanical pencils and block gum eraser
- Small set of colored pencils
- Scotch tape and masking tape
- See through ruler or straight edge at least 12” long, doesn’t have to be very wide

- 6 yards of Wonder Under or your favorite fusible web with a paper backing (must have paper backing)
- 1 ½ yards white muslin, lawn, or cotton batiste, 45” wide (this is the base for your fused appliqué)
- A large selection of cotton fabrics in sizes and colors you would like to use for your picture quilt – Be sure to include very lights, lights, mediums, darks and very darks. Mottled batiks, multi-value and multi colored fabrics, hand dyes and multi printed textures are all good.
- Paper and Fabric Scissors (I recommend a large pair and small pair of the fabric scissors, the small ones work well for cutting out the fabric with the fusible on it. Make sure they are sharp!)
- Small iron and ironing surface (these can be shared between several students). Every student probably cannot have an iron on all at once or we will be blowing fuses.
- Mini craft iron (the Clover one that has the very small triangular head) this also can be shared between several students
- Small blow dryer (also can be shared between several students)
- 12 oz to 16 oz plastic container for water (like a cottage cheese container)

- Optional: collapsible portable easel to hold the 30”x40” foamcore design board, or a table easel if you have one that will hold that size board.
