From Photo, To Pattern, To Quilt

Learn how to turn a photograph into a pattern and then into a quilt.  Also learn how to make an artist’s facing to finish the edges.  You will learn the process by making Rocky Mountain Sunrise using the fused applique technique.  The pattern is included in the class fee.  This class is not intended for facial portraits.

Painting Details, Shadows, and Highlights

Learn a few simple painting techniques that will really enhance your pictorial and landscape art quilts.  We will be using Setacolor textile paints to create depth and interest on some simple samples.  You’ll be amazed at the results!  Patterns for the samples are included in the class fee.  See supply list for items to bring to class.

Painting Calla Lilies

Project Class
5 hour class

This is your chance to try fabric painting without having to purchase all the supplies first.  Learn a few simple painting techniques to create 3 dramatic calla lilies on an 13.25" by 15.5" inch project.  We will be using Setacolor textile paints.  You will start with the basic flower shapes cut out of fabric and then paint on the details.  You will be working from a kit provided in class and using my paints, brushes, and mediums.

Lecture Description:

  • Brief personal history about how I came to make quilts from photos and started painting on them.
  • A slide show of pictorial quilts before they were painted on and what effect (details, shadows, depth) were achieved with fabric paint.
  • Showing samples of painted fabrics: commercially printed and on PDF (prepared for dying) fabric.
  • Showing quilts I have painted on.
